New Album...
...Old Music |
well, that's confusing...
Phil's recorded a collection of tunes he's had swishing about for ages. It's a
short album, 30 minutes, and embodies Phil's idiosyncratic notion of folk
music, with a Yorkshire/American bent.
1: Redder’s Rag - P Snell
A ditty noodled together 30+ years ago.
2: Cold and Frosty Morning - trad arr P Snell
A brisk Old-Time tune, much inspired by the Fuzzy Mountain String Band.
3: Chump Man Blues - Blind Blake arr P Snell
Blind Blake’s song illustrating the malleability of men
4: Don’t Go Looking At Me - P Snell
A tale of Urban paranioa, the city’s no place for us country folk! Interspersed
with “the Growling Old Man and Grumbling Old Woman”, a French Canadian tune
5: St Louis Tickle + Hawkin’s Rag - trad arr P Snell/Ted
Hawkins arr P Snell
A bit of ragtime.
6: Alcohol Island - P Snell
It’s scary to think how easy it is to get into a real mess
7: Old Mother Flanagan/Lookin’ for money - trad arr Phil
Snell/Al Urban- Rockin’ Music
Another brisk Old-Time tune followed by the tale of Staggering Willie’s search
for money.
8: Pas De Chance - P Snell
How are we to defeat the dangerous madmen dominating our media? Ignore them, I
say! The fabulous Sue Coe provides the dance steps. There’s even a bit of
“Turkey in the Straw” in there.
9: The Black Sheep - P Snell
A gentle waltz in 3/4 time - Black Sheep is a favourite beer of mine! Cheers!
10: Took My Gal A-Walking - Poole/Woodleiff - Bug Music Ltd
A song I got from a Charlie Poole recording made in 1928. He is one of my
favourite old time performers.
11: Bonaparte Crossing The Rhine - trad arr P Snell
This tune is usually played fast, but I was thinking about the times armies
crossed the Rhine en route for Moscow and how, each time, millions of people
who were scratching an existence were murdered and abused; this informed the
melancholic rendition..
